Where it all started
The Carhampton Recreation Ground Committee was formed after the 1966 annual parish assembly, with a mandate to secure a recreation ground for the parish. After looking into all possiblilities the committee concluded that the present four acre site in the centre of the village provided the best option. In 1976 a lease was agreed with the Crown Estate with the help of Dennis Merson and Stan Terry. Once this was finalised the field was immediately made available for cricket and football.

Our Heritage
The Rec buildings as they are now, were originally the farm buildings of Eastern Farm, comprising of cow stalls, stone barn and a slaughter house. In 1977 planning permission was applied for to convert the redundant farm buildings into a multi-use recreational centre. With a huge amount of village support involving both financial and physical support from volunteers, the main conversion work was completed in 1978.
In 1982 a board of Trustees which consisted of Dennis Merson, John Terry, Kathleen Sherrin and Peter Fuller was set up. The trustees were required to establish a charity for the recreation ground and to form a management committee from members of the 16 organisations present in the village.

Our Community
Today as in the past the Rec Centre relies totally on volunteers to operate. Committee meetings are held each month where fundraising events are organised and plans for updating the facilities are agreed. Without the help and support of the many volunteers the Carhampton Recreation Centre would not function as it does nor be in the strong state that it currently is.
Many of the recent improvements have been made possible with outside funding from The National Lottery, Somerset Community Foundation, The Feldberg Foundation, Hinckley Point 106 Funding and The Fairfield Trust.
